Tips For Saving Money On Overland Transportation While Backpacking

If you have chosen to save up and spend time backpacking, you likely want to save as much money as possible to continue to travel as long as you can. If you spend too much money on certain aspects of traveling, you will have less left at the end to visit those final few countries that you were so interested in. Here are some tips for saving money on overland transportation while backpacking.

1. Talk to People on Your Flight

If you don't know the area that you're going to be arriving, you might feel stressed out when you finally get off of a flight. The best thing that you can do is talk to the people around you that are going to the same place. Ask how they're getting to their hotel or hostel. Many travelers, especially other people who look like they are backpacking, will be more than happy to share their tips for getting where you need to go without spending a ton of money.

Some travelers might know airport taxi services that will give you a discount based on the hotel from which you are staying if you book their services through the hotel. Others will know about places that offer discounts based on how much you are taking with you. Finally, you might even find that the fellow backpackers are going to the same hostel as you or the same area and you could share an airport taxi.

2. Ask People How They Got to the Airport

If you can't find any fellow backpackers that have tips for how to get to your hotel or hostel, try talking to the people who work at the airport. Ask them how they got to the airport that day and see if you can find anyone that got there using public transportation. This is a much less comfortable way to get to the city from the airport, but if you're seriously cash-strapped, it might be the best way. You can usually get the person to whom you are talking to tell you exact instructions. Be sure that you write them down and show what you've written down to the person giving you directions so that he or she can check to make sure that you have everything exactly right.

For more information, talk to a company that specializes in airport taxi services. They might have discounts that you apply for.
